Welcome to the Verger's Lodgings, a traditional English cottage situated adjacent to the owner's home, Salton Old Vicarage.

The one bedroomed cottage sleeps 2, +2 on a sofabed in the spacious sitting room if required.

Salton is a very peaceful and tranquil small village in the heart of Ryedale, North Yorkshire, an area popular with walkers and cyclists. It is close to the small Georgian market towns of Helmsley, Malton and Pickering.

The Verger's Lodgings received the ETB 4* rating in 2014. Recently renovated, the cottage has been decorated with subtle shades of Farrow and Ball paint, and fabrics from Sanderson and Clarke and Clarke. Original features have been conserved wherever possible to reflect the age and charm of the property.

Children over 6 are welcome, but please note the garden and grounds are not fully fenced and secure.

The Verger's Lodgings is a strictly NO SMOKING cottage.

Sorry, but we do not take pets.

Dining Kitchen

Entered from the courtyard through a Georgian Gothic door, this room has a limestone floor and kitchen units painted in Farrow and Ball's “Vert de Terre”. The work surfaces are black granite and there is a Belfast sink. There are halogen spotlights for good task lighting. There is an electric double oven cooker with ceramic hob, a kettle, a toaster, a microwave oven, and a fridge-freezer. The kitchen is well-equipped with Circulon pans and traditional and modern crockery including a Minton tea-set. At the dining end there is an antique George 111 table and Regency chairs with views over the garden from the window. We provide a bottle of wine, fresh fruit, and eggs from our own hens on your arrival.

It has a 5ft wide brass and iron bedstead; bedding is pure cotton with a feather and down duvet. There is an antique mahogany hanging wardrobe and chest of drawers. Full length mirror. There are halogen spotlights but also wall-mounted bedside lights for a softer effect.

This area has a Victorian table for writing letters, and a comfortable wing chair for reading. A cabinet contains 1820s china which you are welcome to use. A folding screen hides the utility area where you will find a washing machine, electric iron and board, etc. A painted dresser disguises the boiler; the central heating and hot water controls are to one side with instructions. Door to the patio and garden with a row of Victorian coat hooks. Stairs rise to the first floor featuring photographs by the Whitby photographer Frank Meadow Sutcliffe.

A good-sized bathroom with a Heritage roll-top bath and basin, a tiled shower cubicle with an Aqualisa shower, and WC. The floor is solid oak boarding.

Sitting room

The bright and spacious sitting room has excellent views over gently rolling countryside to one side, and Salton's attractive historic church to the other. It has two Victorian tub chairs, two modern armchairs, and a Laura Ashley sofa-bed. There is an open fire with a Regency mantelpiece and an initial supply of coal and wood. (More fuel is available locally in Hovingham or Malton). There is FreeSat TV and a DVD player with access to a DVD library, and some games. A small library includes a selection of books and maps about Yorkshire, as well as general fiction/non-fiction for holiday reading. There is a digital piano for the musical; just ask if you require more playing material. A decanter of Tio Pepe sherry and some nibbles will await you.

The stone patio has garden furniture to enjoy breakfast or a leisurely glass of wine. Guests are welcome to stroll in the garden and grounds: we keep Shetland sheep and Rare Breed hens.

Parking is by the garage in the Courtyard at the end of the driveway. Cycles can be stored securely.
